REQUIREMENT

A global asset management firm needed an experienced interim, reporting to the new CIO/COO, to create and manage a brand new Procurement function (approx. £400m annual spend) in a 12-month programme. With the company successful and growing, requirements included introducing procurement capabilities and establishing fit for purpose processes, guidelines and toolsets, best practice across the organisation, taking costs out of the business, reviewing outsourced contracts, consolidating existing contracts, creating more robust contract frameworks, and strong stakeholder engagement and communications. The business wanted an interim with experience of starting from scratch but who wouldn’t bring a prescriptive view or overly complex approach regarding what procurement should look like.

SOLUTION

With a mandate to kick off a great deal of transformation, this highly experienced interim started by finding out what the company spent its money on and who with, and meeting with senior stakeholders across the business. The role was about managing commercial and delivery risk in contracts – and saving money. It was an iterative process: get some data, talk to people and build a picture while, at the same time, dealing with anything third-party related. Gradually, she built a network of people at all levels in the business and was able to demonstrate a real willingness to help. It was all about getting that buy-in.

OUTCOMES

A key output was a high-level Procurement process and toolset with appropriate governance gates to support an agile and demanding business. In evidencing further success, savings were tracked at 15% year-on-year. This new function brought a consistent best practice, with due diligence and discipline around requirements and suppliers.
